Climate & Site Challenge in South Los Angeles

South Los Angeles sits in a Mediterranean climate zone with mild, wet winters and dry, sun-intense summers. The project is also within a California seismic zone, and the building is close enough to the Pacific coast that the finish must resist marine-air corrosion on a multi-year horizon. For windows and patio doors, three stresses are non-trivial:

• UV stability of dark finishes. Black powder coat fades faster than lighter colors under California sun; the formula and cure cycle matter.

• Marine-air salt. Coastal humidity carries chloride that attacks untreated aluminum and inferior fasteners.

Every window and patio door on this project traveled roughly 11,684 km from DERCHI's Foshan factory to the Port of Los Angeles, then by road to Willowbrook. To survive the journey, frames were:

• Wrapped individually in foam and protective film

• Packed in custom export-grade wooden crates with internal bracing

• Loaded floor-by-floor, marked by elevation, so the on-site crew could install in sequence without re-sorting

On-Site Collaboration with the Local Team

The DERCHI international team worked alongside the local site and installation crews during the final phase of the project. Communication was in English; technical drawings and installation guides were shared in advance. On-site questions about frame reveals, sill pans, and seismic clearances were resolved in person rather than by email — which the local team flagged as the main reason the install stayed on schedule.

Project Outcome

The building's window-and-door package was installed on schedule across the three-story envelope. The matte black finish has held its tone through the construction period, and the powder-coat warranty (in line with Qualicoat-class specifications) applies to the full surface area of frames and sashes. Façade panels were supplied by other trades; DERCHI's scope covered the fenestration only.
